Kindergarten News for the Week of December 19, 2016


Students are invited to wear their ugliest Christmas sweaters on Wednesday, December 21!  No jeans will be permitted.  Only dress code appropriate bottoms may be worn.

Friday, December 23 will be a 12:00 dismissal.  There will be no school from December 24 until January 2.  Classes resume on Tuesday, January 3, 2015.  Enjoy your holiday break!

Polar Express Day will take place on Friday, December 23.  We are inviting students to wear their pajamas to school to celebrate the season together.  Please have your child wear their pajamas on this day to participate in the fun.  Thank you!

Glue

Friday, December 16 will be a Spartan Dress Down Day.  The suggested donation is $1.00.

A dress code clarification paper was sent home today.  Please keep in mind that the dress code will be strictly enforced and that all students should be following the dress code guidelines.  Be sure to pay special attention to acceptable clothing on Spartan Spirit Days and dress down days.

This week we will be focusing on the letter Rr as in rug.  Show and Tell for the letter Rr will be on Friday, December 16.
Our new Reading story is called “Little Quack”.  We will discuss what new things you can do as you get older.  We will also learn about plot.

Kindergarten News for the Week of November 29, 2016

The Kindergarten Field Trip will be on Thursday, December 1.  Students are asked to wear a polo and dress code approved bottoms or better!  This means that students may wear Christmas dresses, suits, etc (even if they aren’t dress code appropriate.)  Please remember that we are going to a theatre and we will be representing North Schuylkill.  Students should not wear gym clothes on the field trip.  We will be leaving PROMPTLY at 9am and returning at approximately 12:30pm.  We will be eating a regular school lunch after our field trip.  Please plan your child’s lunch as you normally do.  Students should NOT bring money on this field trip!

Kindergarten News for the Week of November 21, 2016

Report cards will be distributed on Monday, November 21.  Please keep the report card and return the signed envelope to school.

On Wednesday, November 23, students will be dismissed at 12:00pm.  There will be no school from Thursday, November 24 through Monday, November 28.  Classes will resume on Tuesday, November 29.

Thursday, December 1 is our Kindergarten field trip to the Bloomsburg Theater.  We will be leaving the school promptly at 9:00.  Please make sure your child is on time for school that day.  Your child should wear dress code appropriate clothes or better.  Please do not send your child to school in gym clothes.

This week we will continue to focus on the letter Ii as in igloo.  There will be no Show and Tell this week.

When we return from Thanksgiving break, we will be learning the letter Dd as in dinosaur.  Instead of Show and Tell, we will be doing dinosaur projects.  All information will be sent home in your child’s folder before break.  Projects will be due on Friday, December 2.  Thank you in advance for your assistance!

Kindergarten News for the Week of November 14, 2016

The North Schuylkill Accelerated Reader Program will be having a fundraiser on Thursday, November 17 at the St. Clair Taco Bell.  It will run from 5-8pm.  Please come out and support our school if you are able.  Taco Bell will donate 15% of your purchase to the Accelerated Reader Program!

On Thursday, November 17 we will be participating in a Personal Body Safety presentation.  It will be presented by SARCC.  If you would like to exclude your child from attending the presentation, please send a note to the school.

Friday, November 18 will be a Spartan Dress Down Day.  Students may wear jeans or sweatpants.  The suggested donation is $1.00.

Please remember to review your child’s sight word list every night!  In order to make it through all 18 lists by the end of the year, students should be getting a new list every one to two weeks.

Everyone is invited to attend the NSE Halloween Parade in Spartan Stadium on Friday, October 28.  It will start promptly at 2:00pm with Kindergarten and will end with 6th grade.  Please send your child’s costume to school with him/her in a bag.  Do not send your child to school wearing his/her costume!  Remember, clown costumes and weapons are not permitted.

Kindergarten News for the Week of October 17, 2016


The Scholastic Book Fair will be taking place next week.  Family shopping night is on Monday, October 17 from 4-7pm.  Our class will have time to shop during our Book Exchange class on Thursday, October 20.  If you would like your child to purchase books from the fair, please send money in a labeled envelope.  Keep in mind that tax will be charged on all items. 

Our new Reading story is called “Flowers.”  We will discuss comparing and contrasting, as well as how flowers are unique.

Kindergarten News for the Week of September 26, 2016


Our new Reading story is called “Miss Bindergarten Takes a Field Trip with Kindergarten”.  We will discuss classifying and categorizing, as well as how people in a community cooperate.

Please continue to review sight words with your child every night.  When your child masters a list, a new list will be sent home to practice.

In Math we will begin our new chapter “Analyzing, Comparing, and Composing Shapes”.

Please continue to help your child memorize his/her 4 digit student ID.  The number can be found on his/her bus tag and folder.  This number is important to know so your child can order lunch, log onto the computer, and check out books from the library.  Thank you for your help!

Kindergarten News for the Week of September 19, 2016

Next week we will begin our new Reading story “Plaidypus Lost”.  We will discuss how families cooperate, as well as talk about the setting of a story.  A few new letters will be introduced this week (Oo, Pp, Qq, Rr, Ss) and we will come back later in the year to learn about them in more detail. 

In Math we will begin learning about positional words (up, down, top, bottom, etc.)

Please continue to review sight words every day.  Your child’s sight word paper should be kept in his/her folder so you know when to move onto the next list.

You may want to send in a sweater or jacket for your child to keep in his/her cubby.  Our room is often chilly due to the constant blowing of our air system.  You may also want to send a change of clothes to be kept in case of spills or accidents.  These are completely optional and up to you!

If your child has not learned his/her 4-digit ID number yet, please continue to work on memorization.  The number is used for buying lunch, checking out books from the library, and logging on to computers.

Kindergarten News for the Week of September 12, 2016


Picture day is on Tuesday, September 13.  Please send your child’s money and order form to school no later than Monday, September 12.

Friday, September 16 is a Spartan Dress Down Day.  Students may wear a Spartan shirt with jeans or dress code appropriate sweatpants/mesh shorts.  The suggested donation is $1.

Next week we will begin our new Reading story “We Are So Proud”.  We will discuss how school children work and play together, as well as talk about the setting of a story.  A few new letters will be introduced this week (Ff, Gg, Hh, Ii, Jj, Kk, Ll, Mm, and Nn) and we will come back later in the year to learn about them in more detail. 

In Math we will continue to learn about identifying and describing shapes.

All children need a snack and drink every day.  In order to eliminate confusion about whether something is a snack or a drink, you may want to pack your child’s lunch in a regular lunchbox and his/her snack in a paper bag marked “snack”.  Some children have eaten snack for lunch when they were supposed to eat in the cafeteria!

You may want to send in a sweater or jacket for your child to keep in his/her cubby.  Our room is often chilly due to the constant blowing of our air system.  You may also want to send a change of clothes to be kept in case of spills or accidents.  These are completely optional and up to you.

Please continue to help your child memorize his/her student ID number.  This number can be found on the front of his/her folder and will be used throughout your child’s schooling at North Schuylkill to buy lunch, check out library books, and log on to the computer.

Kindergarten News for the Week of September 5, 2016

Congratulations, you made it through the first week of Kindergarten!  Hold on tight because this year will fly by!

There will be no school on Monday, September 5.  Enjoy your long weekend!

Next week we will begin our first Reading story, “The Little School Bus”.  We will discuss how children get to school.  We will also learn about characters.  A few new letters will be introduced this week (Aa, Bb, Cc, Dd, and Ee) and we will come back later in the year to learn about them in more detail. 

In Math we will be learning how to identify and describe shapes.

All children need a snack and drink every day.  Snack time is at 2:45. Kindergarten News for the Week of May 23, 2016

Kindergarten Graduation will take place in the High School Auditorium at 6:00pm on Tuesday, May 24.  Kindergarten students should arrive at the High School Gymnasium between 5:15 and 5:45.  We ask that parents do NOT enter the gymnasium.  All students must wear a white collared shirt.  Girls should not wear anything in their hair since they will be wearing caps.  Graduation tickets were sent home with your child today (Friday, May 20).  Please keep the tickets in a safe place as no one will be admitted without a ticket.  More information will be in your child’s folder on Monday.

Carnival Day will be on Friday, May 27.  We will be outside for most of the day and the forecast looks like it will be about 80 degrees!  Please apply sunscreen to your child before you send them to school.  You may also pack sunscreen to reapply later in the day. 

This week we will be reviewing the letter Uu and its long sound as in unicorn.  There will be no Show and Tell for the remainder of the year.

Our new Reading story is called “Alistair and Kip’s Great Adventure!”  We will discuss what friends can build together.  We will also learn about plot.

Kindergarten News for the Week of May 16, 2016


Monday, May 16 is “Kick Butts Day”!  We will discuss why we should say no to tobacco use.  We will be playing fun games outside with some of the high school members of Teens Against Tobacco, therefore students will be permitted to wear gym clothes to school on Monday. 

Kindergarten Graduation will take place on Tuesday, May 24 at 6:00pm in the High School Auditorium.  Graduation tickets will be sent home on Friday, May 20.  No family members will be admitted without a ticket.  Graduating Kindergarten students and children under 5 who can fit on their parent’s lap do not need a ticket to enter.  More information will be sent home next week. 

This week we will be reviewing the letter Ee and its long sound as in eagle.  There will be no Show and Tell for the remainder of the year.

Our new Reading story is called “Building Beavers.”  We will discuss how beavers build their homes.  We will also learn about main idea.

In Math we will be learning to classify and categorize data.

Kindergarten News for the Week of May 9, 2016

The Scholastic Book Fair will be going on this week.  Our day to shop is on Monday, May 9 during Library class.  Please send your child’s book fair money in an envelope labeled with his/her name and the amount of money that is enclosed.  Remember, sales tax will be charged on all items.  If you would like to shop with your child, you can come to the evening sale on Monday, May 9 from 4:00-7:00pm.

This week we will be reviewing long and short vowel sounds.  There will be no Show and Tell for the remainder of the year.

Our new Reading story is called “Old MacDonald Had a Woodshop.”  We will discuss what tools you need to build things.  We will also learn about character.

In Math we will be learning to classify and categorize data.

Kindergarten News for the Week of May 2, 2016

Kindergarten News for the Week of April 25, 2016


The final Scholastic book order of this school year was sent home in your child’s folder last Friday.  This is your last chance to stock up on books for the summer!  Book orders are due on Friday, April 29.

The Pottsville Republican newspaper will be publishing “A Child’s View” on Thursday, April 28.  Don’t forget to look for your child’s response to what they want to be when they grow up!

This week we will be learning about the letter Qq as in quilt.  The girls in our class will get to be queens for the day on Thursday.  On Friday, Q and U will be getting married!  There will be no show and tell this week.

Our new Reading story is called “This is the Way We Go to School.”  We will discuss how children around the world get to school.  We will also learn about drawing conclusions.

In Math we will be learning about measurement.

Kindergarten News for the Week of April 18, 2016


The PTO Chinese Auction will be this Saturday from 10am-5pm and Sunday from 12pm-3pm.  Prize winners will be announced on Sunday at 3pm.  There are many wonderful prizes including a big screen TV and tickets to Disney World!  We hope to see you there!

Kindergarten News for the Week of April 11, 2016


Monday, April 11 is a dress down day for the PSSA kickoff.  Please send your child to school in a Spartan shirt and jeans/sweatpants/gym shorts. 

Thank you for all of your help with the United States projects!  They looked great and the facts were very interesting!
Don’t forget to do a quick review of your child’s sight words every night.  Remember, students must learn all 96 Kindergarten sight words by the end of the year!

This week we will be learning about the letter Vv as in violin.  Show and Tell for the letter Vv will be on Friday, April 15.

Our new Reading story is called “The Little Engine That Could.”  We will discuss what kinds of work trains do.  We will also learn about plot.

Kindergarten News for the Week of April 4, 2016

Kindergarten Graduation pictures will be taken on Wednesday, April 6.  Please send in your order and money to school no later than Tuesday, April 5.  Students must wear a white collared shirt so that everyone looks the same on the class composite picture.  Girls must wear their hair down so it will fit under the cap.  Thank you!

Don’t forget to do a quick review of your child’s sight words every night.  Remember, students must learn all 96 Kindergarten sight words by the end of the year!

This week we will be learning about the letter Uu as in umbrella.  Instead of show and tell, we will be doing United States reports.  Each student will be assigned one of the fifty states.  On Friday, April 8, students must present their state to the class and be able to say the name of their state, three facts about the state, and show a picture of the state.  More information will come home in your child’s folder on Monday.

Our new Reading story is called “Trucks Roll.”  We will discuss what kinds of transportation help people do their jobs.  We will also learn about comparing and contrasting.

In Math we will continue to learn about composing and decomposing numbers.

Kindergarten News for the Week of March 28, 2016

There will be no school on Friday, March 25.  Enjoy your Easter weekend!

The PTO is holding a Chinese Auction again this year as a fundraiser.  Each class is doing a themed basket.  Our basket theme is “Crayola”.  We are asking that parents send in an item or items to contribute to our class basket.  Please send anything that is part of the “Crayola” brand.  This includes crayons, markers, colored pencils, Color Wonder, sketch pads, paint, clay, etc.  In order to stick with the theme of our basket, please do not send in items unless they specifically say “Crayola” on them.  Please send in your item before April 1, 2016.  Thank you in advance for your donation!  The classroom from each grade whose basket has the most tickets at the end of the auction will receive an ice cream party!!

Kindergarten News for the Week of March 21, 2016

Spring will finally arrive on Sunday!  Hang in there through what is hopefully the last bit of snow, and look forward to the warm, sunny days ahead!

Now that Daylight Savings Time has passed, students are allowed to wear shorts to school again.  Please use your discretion as we will still be going outside for recess most of the time.
