Kindergarten News for the Week of December 14, 2015


Family night for Brain Show Mania is TONIGHT (Friday, December 11) at 6pm.  Everyone is invited to attend this fun-filled evening!

Friday, December 18 will be a school-wide dress down day.  Students who dress down are asked to donate $1.00 for families in need over the Holidays.

All students are asked to wear their ugliest Christmas sweater with jeans on Tuesday, December 22.  You do not need to donate in order to participate. 

Wednesday, December 23 will be a pajama day for Kindergarten.  Please send your child to school in their favorite pajamas for our Polar Express Day.  December 23 is also a 1:00pm early dismissal for NSE.

This week we will be focusing on the letter Rr as in ride.  Show and Tell for the letter Rr will be on Friday, December 18.

Our new Reading story is called “Little Quack”.  We will discuss what new things you can do as you get older.  We will also learn about plot.

In Math we will continue learning about numbers from 6-10.

Kindergarten News for the Week of December 7, 2015


The 2nd Annual Coat, Hat, Scarf, and Glove Drive Giveaway will be in the Elementary Cafeteria on December 8 from 2-4pm, and December 10 from 4-6pm.

Scholastic Book Order flyers were sent home this week and are due on Wednesday, December 9. 

Congratulations to our super AR reader, Autumn, who read 78 books during the month of November!  Awesome job!! 

This week we will continue to focus on the letter Nn as in net.  Show and Tell will be on Friday, December 11.

Our new Reading story is called “Little Panda”.  We will discuss how a panda changes in its first year of life.  We will also learn about comparing and contrasting.

In Math we will continue learning about numbers from 6-10.

Kindergarten News for the Week of November 23, 2015

We will be accepting donations for the 2nd Annual Coat, Hat, Scarf, and Glove Drive until Friday, December 4.  The giveaway will be in the Elementary Cafeteria on December 10 from 4-7pm, and December 12 from 10am-2pm.

Tuesday, November 24 will be a school-wide dress down day.  Students may wear plain (no writing) sweatpants for diabetes awareness.  We are asking all who are able to donate at least $1.00.

On Wednesday, November 25, students will be dismissed at 1:00pm.  There will be no school from Thursday, November 26 through Monday, November 30.  Classes will resume on Tuesday, December 1.

This week we will continue to focus on the letter Ii as in igloo.  There will be no Show and Tell this week.

Our new Reading story is called “Jack and the Beanstalk”.  We will discuss how make believe plants are alike and different.  We will also learn about realism and fantasy.

In Math we will continue comparing and ordering numbers from 0-5.

Kindergarten News for the Week of November 9, 2015

There is no school for students on Monday, November 9 due to the parent conferences. 

Thursday, November 12 we will be supporting our troops by wearing jeans!  We are asking all who are able to donate $1 to raise money for this great cause.  Your contribution is greatly appreciated!

The Kindergarten field trip will be on Friday, November 13.  Please send your child to school on his/her regular bus.  Students must wear the red and blue Spartan shirt that was given to them by the PTO.

Kindergarten News for the Week of November 2, 2015

This week we will focus on the letter Pp as in pan.  Show and Tell for the letter Pp will be on Friday, November 6.  A paper bag with the letter Pp will be sent home in your child’s folder on Thursday.  Please send the bag back to school on Friday with one or two small items that start with Pp.   Please note that the items must be small enough to fit inside the brown paper bag.  Thank you for your help!

Our new Reading story is called “Animal Babies in Grasslands”.  We will discuss what special animals live in grasslands.  We will also learn about main idea.

In Math we will begin learning about numbers 6-10.

Parent Teacher Conferences will be on Monday, November 9 from 12pm-6pm.  Conference forms were due back Friday, October 30.  If you did not get a time confirmation sheet back, you will receive one by November 2 at the latest.

Scholastic book orders were sent home on Wednesday.  If you would like to order books, the forms and payment are due back by Friday, November 6.  Thank you to everyone who has bought books so far.  This year we have already gotten close to 50 free books for our classroom!  Wow!

The Kindergarten field trip to see “The Peanuts Movie” will be on November 13.  Please send your child to school at the regular time on that day wearing his/her field trip shirt (red and blue from PTO). 

The North Schuylkill School District will be hosting its 2nd Annual Coat Drive from November 2 – December 4.  We are asking anyone who is able to donate new or gently used hats, coats, scarves, and gloves.  This is a wonderful way to help families who are in need of warm clothing.  Also, any family who is in need of winter wear is invited to attend the Give Away in the NSE Cafeteria.  It will take place on Thursday, December 10 from 4-7pm and Saturday, December 12 from 10am-2pm.

Kindergarten News for the Week of October 26, 2015

Show and Tell for the letter Aa has been postponed until Monday, October 26.  Please send in one or two items that begin with Aa.

Our new Reading story is called “Nature Spy”.  We will discuss what we can learn about nature when we look closely.  We will also learn about setting.

In Math we will continue learning about numbers from 0-5.

The Fall Celebration will take place this Friday, October 30.  There will be a parade beginning at 1:30 in the football stadium and all are invited to attend!  Students are welcome to wear their Halloween costumes but we ask that there is no blood or gore.  Also, any toy weapons associated with the costume must stay at home.  Please do not send your child to school wearing their costume.  You should send it in a bag and we will change before the parade.  Thank you!

Parent Teacher Conferences will be on Monday, November 9 from 12pm-6pm.  Conference forms were sent home today.  Please return the form by Friday, October 30.  I will try my best to schedule each parent at their preferred time but time slots will be given out at a first come first served basis.  For example, if you turn in your paper this Monday, you will have a better chance of getting the time slot that you requested.  You will receive a confirmation date half sheet by November 2 at the latest.

This week we will be celebrating our drug free school with Red Ribbon Week!  Your child is invited to participate in the daily themes.  They are listed below in the schedule.

Our new Reading story is called “Flowers”.  We will discuss how flowers are unique, as well as discuss comparing and contrasting.

Please continue to review the sight words in your child’s folder every night.  The words are tested each Friday.  Once your child masters a list, a new one will be put in their folder. 

In Math we will begin learning about numbers from 0-10.

The NSE Scholastic Book Fair is this week!  There will be a family shopping night on Monday, October 19 from 4-7pm.  We will also shop as a class on Friday, October 23.  If you would like your child to purchase a book from the fair, please send a labeled envelope with book money inside.  It is also helpful to send along a list of books you would like your child to purchase. 

The NSE Fall Celebration will take place on Friday, October 30.  There will be a parade around the track in the football stadium beginning at 1:30.  All are invited.  Students are welcome to wear costumes and there will be prizes given out to the best dressed in each grade!

If you have not sent in $5.00 for party money, please do so as soon as possible.  The money is used for purchasing snacks and goodies for classroom parties (Halloween and Valentine’s Day).

Kindergarten News for the Week of October 5, 2015
October 5 we will be having a “blue out” for Bully Prevention Week.  Please send your child to school in a blue shirt and blue jeans.

There will be an early dismissal at 12:00 on Friday, October 9.  There will be no school on Monday, October 12.  Enjoy your long weekend!

Picture day will be on Tuesday, October 13.  An order form was sent home in your child’s folder.  Please send the order form/envelope back to school no later than Thursday, October 9.  Thank you!

Please remember to send your child’s book buddy bag back to school every day so they can receive a new AR book.  Don’t forget to write down what book you read and the date you read it!  This information will help us decide who will be entered into the prize drawings at the end of the year.  In order to receive credit for the month, your child must read 16 books from either school or home.

Our new Reading story is called “Smash!  Crash!”.  We will discuss characters, as well as what people like to do with their friends.

Kindergarten News for the Week of September 28, 2015


Our new Reading story is called “Miss Bindergarten Takes a Field Trip with Kindergarten”.  We will discuss classifying and categorizing, as well as how people in a community cooperate.

Please continue to review sight words with your child every night.  When your child masters a list, a new list will be sent home to practice.

In Math we will begin our new chapter “Analyzing, Comparing, and Composing Shapes”.

Please continue to help your child memorize his/her 4 digit student ID.  The number can be found on his/her bus tag and folder.  This number is important to know so your child can order lunch, log onto the computer, and check out books from the library.  Thank you for your help!

Next week is Homecoming Week!  We encourage all students to participate in each day’s theme.  Just remember, school rules and dress code still apply.  Please keep the outfits fun but school appropriate!

Kindergarten News for the Week of September 21, 2015

Next week we will begin our new Reading story “Plaidypus Lost”.  We will discuss how families cooperate, as well as talk about the setting of a story.  A few new letters will be introduced this week (Oo, Pp, Qq, Rr, Ss) and we will come back later in the year to learn about them in more detail. 

In Math we will begin learning about positional words (up, down, top, bottom, etc.)

Please continue to review sight words every day.  Your child’s sight word folder should be returned to school each day.  I will put new words in the folder as your child masters each list.

You may want to send in a sweater or jacket for your child to keep in his/her cubby.  Our room is often chilly due to the constant blowing of our air system.  You may also want to send a change of clothes to be kept in case of spills or accidents.  These are completely optional and up to you!

If your child has not learned his/her 4-digit ID number yet, please continue to work on memorization.  The number is used for buying lunch, checking out books from the library, and logging on to computers.

Kindergarten News for the Week of September 14, 2015



Next week we will begin our new Reading story “We Are So Proud”.  We will discuss how school children work and play together, as well as talk about the setting of a story.  A few new letters will be introduced this week (Ff, Gg, Hh, Ii, Jj, Kk, Ll, Mm, and Nn) and we will come back later in the year to learn about them in more detail. 

In Math we will continue to learn about identifying and describing shapes.

All children need a snack and drink every day.  Snack time is at 2:00.  In order to eliminate confusion about whether something is a snack or a drink, you may want to pack your child’s lunch in a regular lunchbox and his/her snack in a paper bag marked “snack”.  Some children have eaten snack for lunch when they were supposed to eat in the cafeteria!

You may want to send in a sweater or jacket for your child to keep in his/her cubby.  Our room is often chilly due to the constant blowing of our air system.  You may also want to send a change of clothes to be kept in case of spills or accidents.  These are completely optional and up to you!

Please make sure your child has his/her red bus tag each day!  We want everyone to get home safely and some children do not know their full name ---let alone address, phone number, etc.

Thank you to the families who volunteered to take our class pets home for the summer.  I know they will be in good hands!

Kindergarten Graduation will be held next Tuesday, May 19 at 6:00pm in the high school auditorium.  Please arrange to bring your child to the cafeteria between 5:15 and 5:45.  All parking will be in the upper lot at the high school.  The lower lot is for handicap parking only.  Remember, you must have a ticket to get in (this does not include kindergarteners who are graduating).  Due to construction at the high school there is no air conditioning.  Please try to remember this when dressing your child since they will have a cap and gown over their clothes.

This week we will be learning about the letters Yy and Qq.  Show and Tell for the letters Yy and Qq will be on Friday, May 8.  Please send in one or two items that begin with the letter Yy or Qq.

Our Reading story this week is “This is the Way We Go to School.”  We will discuss how children around the world get to school.  We will also learn about drawing conclusions.

In Math, we will continue to compose and decompose numbers from 11-20.

The book fair will take place all this week.  Parents can bring students to shop on Monday, May 4 from 4-7pm.  Our class will shop during our special time on Wednesday, May 6.  Please send any money/orders in an envelope with your child’s name on it. 

NSE will be having a drawing on Friday, May 8 to see who won the AR contest for the bike!  Please have all April AR forms completed by Wednesday, May 6 so your child has a chance to win.  Every child who turned in a completed monthly AR paper has already been entered into the drawing for that child’s number of completed months.   

I am still looking for one more family who is interested in taking care of our frogs or hermit crab for the summer.  Please send me a note if you would like to house one of our animals.  Families will be picked on a first come, first served basis.  Thank you!

Summer Homes for Class Pets

Hello Parents,

It is that time of year where we begin preparing for the end of school!  I am looking for a summer home for both our frogs (Fred and George) and our hermit crab (Mrs. Krabs).  If you are interested in taking care of one or both of our habitats, please let me know as soon as possible.  The animals are super easy to take care of and will make a great addition to any family for the summer.  Summer homes will be given based on a first come, first served basis.  Thank you!

This week we will be learning about the letter Uu as in umbrella.  Instead of show and tell for the letter Uu, each child will be assigned a state to research (much like the dinosaur project).  Please help your child find a picture of his/her state and 2/3 facts about the state.  Papers will be sent home Monday with more details.  Projects are due this Friday, April 24.  Thank you for your assistance!

Our Reading story this week is “Trucks Roll!”  We will discuss what kinds of transportation help people do their jobs.  We will also learn about comparing and contrasting.

In Math, we will finish our topic about understanding subtraction.  We will begin our new topic about composing numbers.

The Chinese Auction will be held this weekend, April 10 and 11 in the Elementary School gym.  Please see the pink paper in your child’s folder for more details.
Field trip permission slips were sent home today.  Please send them back as soon as possible.  If the permission slip is not returned, your child will not be permitted to attend our fun field trip to Zoo America.

Scholastic Book Order flyers were sent home this week and are due back by Friday, April 17.  Please consider ordering books for your child’s home library.  Some books only cost $1.00!
This week we will be learning about the letter Xx.  Instead of show and tell for the letter Xx, we will be having a treasure hunt on Friday.  Xx marks the spot!

Our Reading story this week is “Mayday! Mayday!”.  We will discuss what kinds of transportation help us in an emergency.  We will also learn about cause and effect.
In Math, we will continue our topic about understanding subtraction.

Kindergarten News for the Week of March 23, 2015

Happy Spring!  The class is excited for all of the snow to be gone so we can enjoy some warm weather and outside recess.
Scholastic Book Orders were sent home this week and are due back on Wednesday, March 25.  Remember, for every book purchased our classroom receives free books to build our library. 

The NSE Chinese Auction will be held on April 11 and April 12.  Each classroom will be making a basket to be auctioned off.  Our class theme is “Game Night”.  If you would like to donate, please send in games for our basket by March 27.  They can be board games, card games or other games that a family can play together.  The classroom from each grade whose basket has the most tickets at the end of the auction will receive an ice cream party for their classroom.  Thank you to those of you who have already sent in games!
This week we will be continuing to learn about the letter Ee as in elephant.  There will be no show and tell this week.

Our Reading story this week is “If You Could Go to Antarctica”.  We will discuss what it would be like to have an Antarctic adventure.  We will also learn about classifying and categorizing.

Thank you all for reviewing the dress code.  Please continue to look over the dress code and be sure your child’s outfit adheres to the policy.  Please note that NO hoodies will be permitted during the school day.  If your child gets cold during the day, please send in a sweater (plain, no writing) with no hood.  Also, leggings are not permitted unless they are worn under a skirt.  Thank you for your attentiveness in this matter.

Kindergarten News for the Week of February 23, 2015


 
What wild weather we’ve been having!  Let’s cross our fingers that spring comes soon!

Scholastic book order flyers were sent home this week and are due back on Monday, February 23.  Remember, all of the books our class orders gain us bonus points to use for free classroom books.  If we can sell $125.00 as a class this month, we will receive TEN free books for our classroom!

We have had lots of runny noses this year and are running very low on tissues.  If you have any extra boxes of tissues at home and would like to donate them to our classroom, we would greatly appreciate it.  Thank you to the families who have already donated tissues!

Read Across America Day will be on Friday, February 27.  We will celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday, have special guests from Bloomsburg University present a lesson, and even have a special guest read us a Dr. Seuss book!  If you have any Dr. Seuss books at home, feel free to send them to school (with your child’s name inside) so we can look at many of his books.
