Congratulations!!  You made it through the first week of kindergarten!  There is no school on Monday due to the Labor Day holiday.  Enjoy the long weekend!
Next week we will begin our new Reading story “We Are So Proud”.  We will discuss how school children work and play together, as well as talk about the setting of a story.  A few new letters will be introduced this week (Ff, Gg, Hh, Ii, Jj, Kk, Ll, Mm, and Nn) and we will come back later in the year to learn about them in more detail.

In Math we will continue to learn about identifying and describing shapes.

All children need a snack and drink every day.  Snack time is usually at 11:30.  In order to eliminate confusion about whether something is a snack or a drink, you may want to pack your child’s lunch in a regular lunchbox and his/her snack in a paper bag marked “snack”.  Some children have eaten snack for lunch when they were supposed to eat in the cafeteria!
You may want to send in a sweater or jacket for your child to keep in his/her cubby.  Our room is often chilly due to the constant blowing of our air system.  You may also want to send a change of clothes to be kept in case of spills or accidents.  These are completely optional and up to you!

Please make sure your child has his/her red bus tag each day!  We want everyone to get home safely and some children do not know their full name ---let alone address, phone number, etc.

Kindergarten News for the Week of February 24-28, 2014

Kindergarten News for the Week of February 24-28, 2014

This week we will be learning the letter Ee as in elephant.  Show and Tell for the letter Ee will be on Friday, February 28.  Please send in one or two small items that begin with the letter Ee.
Our Reading story for this week is called “My Lucky Day”.  We will be discussing what kind of adventures you can have on a lucky day.  We will also be learning about cause and effect.

In Math we will finish Topic 7 - Understanding Addition and move on to Topic 8 - Understanding Subtraction.

Read Across America Day will be held on Friday, February 28!  This will be an exciting day as we learn about Dr. Seuss and read some of his stories.  Students from Bloomsburg University will be teaching a lesson to our class and we will have a guest reader visit us to read a Dr. Seuss story!  If you have any Dr. Seuss books at home, you are welcome to send them to school with your child on Friday.  Please make sure your name is somewhere on the book so we can return it to you.  Thank you!
Now that we are halfway through the school year, Kindergarten will be doing something different with the word lists.  Every other week, your child will be getting an odd numbered (11, 13, 15, etc) word list in his/her folder.  These lists are for practice only and will not be tested.  The even numbered (12, 14, 16, etc) word lists will be tested every other week as a “cold read”.  You are to practice the skill of blending with your child on the odd numbered word lists so they understand that skill to read the even numbered lists.  This is to prevent memorization of the words, and to make sure each child truly understands the blending skill.  Thank you for practicing each night with your child!

Scholastic Book Orders are in your child’s folder and are due back Friday, February 28.  There is a coupon attached to the order forms for a free book up to $5.00!  You may use that coupon online or send it back with your order.    Please note that you must spend $10.00 in order to get your free book.
The first annual Spring Fling Chinese Auction will be held on April 12-13.  Each class will have a basket in the auction and the winner in each grade gets a pizza party!  Our theme is “Bedtime Stories”.  All families who are able are asked to donate one children’s book for our class basket.  The book must be new or lightly used/in good condition.   Thank you to those of you who have already donated!

Our specials schedule for the week is:
Monday – Day 1 – Library (Don’t forget your books!)
Tuesday – Day 2 - Music
Wednesday– Day 3 – Gym (Remember your sneakers!) and Jump Rope for Heart!
Thursday– Day  4  - Computers
Friday– Day 5 - Art

Please let me know if you or your child needs anything.  Have an excellent weekend!

Kindergarten News for the Week of January 27 - January 31, 2014

Next week we will be continuing to learn the letter Bb as in balloon.  We will also be learning the letter Uu as in umbrella.  Instead of Show and Tell on Friday, January 31, we will be doing something a little different.  In your child’s folder you will find information about a United States project.  Please help your child find information on his/her state and help him/her prepare to present in front of the class on January 31.  Thank you for your help with this homework!

Due to the most recent snow days and delays, Word List #10 will come home next Friday and will be tested on Friday, February 7.  Don’t worry!  We will make up the snow days later in school year.  I will let you know when those days will be made up as soon as I can.

In Math this week we will be continuing to learn about numbers to 100.

In Reading, we will be continuing to read our story, “Seeds”.  We will be discussing what seeds become when they are planted.  We will also be learning to draw conclusions.

Due to this week’s snow day, report cards will now be distributed on Monday, January 27.  Please sign and return to me by Friday, January 31.

The updated January school schedule (purple paper) that was in your child’s folder last week is no longer correct.  Please see below for the correct cycle days.

Our specials schedule for the week is:
