April 22-26

April is just flying by!  That means Kindergarten will be busy bees until the end of school!

Next week in Phonics we will be learning about digraph sh, as in shark and shin.

In Math we will be learning how to count forward and backward on a number line, matching a number card to a set of up to 20 objects, solving a problem by drawing a picture, identifying the numbers 11-30, and identifying a sphere.

In Reading we will be discussing how children from around the world get to school.  Our new story is called “This is the Way We Go to School”.  We will also be learning how to draw conclusions from text.

Word List #22 will be sent home today and tested on Friday, April 26.  Please remember to practice the words every night with your child.  From now on, if everybody in the class reads all of the words correctly, we will get a treat!

I will be at training sessions on Wednesday morning (April 24) and Thursday all day (April 25).  Please send all important messages in your child’s folder.  If you send an e-mail or call, I cannot guarantee that my substitute will get the message.

The weekly specials schedule is:
Monday – Day 2 - Music
Tuesday – Day 3 – Gym ( Don’t forget your sneakers!)
Wednesday – Day 4 - Computers
Thursday – Day 5 - Art
Friday  - Day 1 – Library (Remember your books!)

If you ever have any questions, please contact me by phone or e-mail.

Have a spectacular weekend!

Next week in Phonics we will be learning about digraph ck and the Final /k/ Spelling Rule.  At the end of a word, ck after a short vowel makes the /k/ sound.

In Math we will be exploring tangrams, measuring length using nonstandard units, and graphing a picture on a pictograph.

In Reading we will be learning how people in different parts of the world travel in our story “On the Move!”  We will also be learning how to recall and retell elements of a story.

Word List #21 will be sent home today and tested on Friday, April 19.  Please remember to practice the words every night with your child.  From now on, if everyone gets all of the words right we will have a special treat!

You will notice on some of the Phonics worksheets that our class has been writing words instead of only letters.  One of the end of the year assessments will ask the students to write as many words as they can in a certain amount of time. I give them about 6 minutes in class to write as many words as possible.   If you notice that your child is not filling up all of the spaces with words on his/her Phonics sheet, please take some time to practice writing words with your child at home.  Thank you!

I hope you all had an enjoyable Easter vacation!  That will be our last long vacation until summer is here!

We finished learning the letter Qq and combination qu today with our wedding.  It was so quaint!  Thank you for sending your child to school dressed up so nicely.  It really felt like we were at a real wedding!

Next week in Phonics we will be learning a long vowel sound rule.  When a vowel is not followed by a consonant it is long; code it with a macron.  For example - a, flu, hi, me, and so all have long vowels.

Word List #20 will be sent home today and tested on Friday, April 12.  Please remember to practice the words every night with your child!

Just a reminder that the Wedding of Q and U is tomorrow!  Please dress your child in clothes they could wear to a wedding.  Girls can wear dresses/skirts and boys can wear a nice shirt and tie.  Thank you!
